Ones to Watch at CinemAsia 2013

If you have a passion for Asian films, this year’s CinemAsia is bound to have plenty of exciting offerings that you won’t want to miss. This is the sixth time that this vibrant biannual festival will be held and a large number of visitors are expected to flock to the city of Amsterdam this year to enjoy some of the best films and documentaries that represent Asian cinema.

This is the perfect opportunity to take a break and enjoy the city of Amsterdam while watching celebrated films from countries such as Thailand, China, Korea and Japan. These films reflect the rapidly changing face of Asia and this is a rare opportunity for film lovers to see films that only usually make it to a handful of independent cinemas, if they make it out of their country of origin at all. There are a large number of direct flights to Amsterdam from most international airports in Europe, which makes it easy for film lovers to enjoy an easy stopover in the city and catch the films of their choice.

People who need to find last minute local accommodation will soon find that Amsterdam offers an excellent range of accommodation to choose from and those who take the time to shop around are sure to scoop up a great deal. Once you have chosen somewhere to stay, you will have plenty of time to focus on enjoying CinemAsia 2013. There are more than a dozen films and documentaries to choose from this year, each played with English subtitles for non-linguists.

Audiences are invited to follow the life of Korean fisherman Captain Kang in the eponymous documentary. The documentary was directed by Ho-Yeon Won and is particularly powerful as it depicts how Captain Kang manages to draw strength from his family to continue fishing and smiling even though he has lost both of his legs in an accident.

People who enjoy comedy should make sure that they pick up tickets to see the Indonesian film Demi-Ucok which focuses on the struggle between mother and daughter as mother Mak Gondut tries to find her unwilling and free-thinking daughter Gloria a husband.

One of the great things about many of these independent films is that they present an alternative side of life, which is certainly the case with the film Eden by Japanese director Masaharu Take. The film highlights the controversial and often challenging life of transsexual and transgender people in Japan, especially those who choose to step into the spotlight and become entertainers.

Other films that will be shown as part of CinemAsia 2013 include the short film Arigato, Azooma, Bollywood romantic comedy English Vinglish and the Taiwanese film GFXBF, which focuses on the world of politics, love and friendship. For more ideas about which films to watch during Cinema Asia, make sure that you see the schedule for 2013 so that you don’t miss out on your top picks.
